Microsoft releases a new out-of-band update i.e. KB5005393 for Windows 10 1607 users. Installing this non-security patch will fix the printing issue in connection with a SmartCard authentication along with increasing the OS Build to 14393.4532.
Though this problem affects only a small subset of Windows users, updates and mitigation steps from Microsoft are always worth installing on the computer. Here is a quick overview of this optional update –
The key highlights of this build update are as follows –
- Addresses an issue that usually prevents printers, scanners, and multifunction devices from working effectively.
The problem occurs only on those devices that don’t comply with section 3.2.1 of the RFC 4556 specification, which is required for CVE-2021-33764.
Kindly note that all non-compliant printers or scanners will not work efficiently while using smart card authentication (PIV). To enable this temporary mitigation, employ a registry key.
Here’s how to tweak this registry –
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type “
regedit” in the text box, and hit OK.
- When the registry window opens up, navigate to the following –
- Create a new DWORD entry and rename this to “Allow3DesFallback”.
- Double-click over the newly created entry and change its Value data to the following –
1 – Enable temporary mitigation
0 – Enable the default behavior; this requires your device to be in compliance with section 3.2.1 of RFC 4556 spec.
Note: If not done, the issue will continue to occur even after you regularly update on domain controllers (DC) in your environment.
